Q: Okay, but what do I actually write?

M. Boudreaux writes psychological horror, Southern Gothic, supernatural horror, folk horror, and dark thrillers.

Q: How much of it is real?

The plots are fiction, but many of the emotions have roots in trauma, grief, family, fear, and real-life experiences.

Q: So writing is basically therapy?

In her own odd way, yes. M. Boudreaux uses fiction as a place to process difficult experiences by turning them into stories and leaving some of their weight on the page.

M. Boudreaux is a Louisiana horror author, a mom, and somebody who has discovered that apparently the healthiest place to put certain thoughts is inside fictional people and then make their lives considerably worse.

A lot of her stories start with pieces of real life. Grief. Trauma. Family. Fear. The thoughts you replay when the house is quiet and your brain decides sleep is optional. She does not write autobiography, but real emotion has a way of finding a different face and walking into the story anyway. Writing has become a strange kind of therapy for her: take the thing, twist it into fiction, get it out, and leave it on the page instead of carrying all of it around. Her books include The Listener, The Grief Counselor, The Kettle, and Play Dead.

Okay, but what do I actually write?

Psychological horror, Southern Gothic, supernatural horror, folk horror, and dark thrillers. Usually something is wrong long before anybody can prove it, somebody is carrying more than they admit, and I keep poking at the problem until everybody is uncomfortable.

How much of it is real?

The plots are fiction. The feelings usually have roots. A lot of my stories grow out of trauma, grief, family, fear, and things from real life that stayed with me longer than I wanted them to. I take the part I cannot stop thinking about, hand it to fictional people, make the situation significantly worse, and somehow that helps me put some of it down.

So writing is basically therapy?

In a very weird way, yes. Writing gives me somewhere to put things. I can turn something painful, frightening, or complicated into a story and get it out of my head without pretending it never happened. It is probably not the normal way to process things, but apparently my version involves fictional trauma and a body count.
